Akutan is a second-class city located on Akutan Island in the eastern Aleutians. Akutan Island is one of the Krenitzin Islands of the Fox Island group. The island’s hills are home to a diverse array of wildflowers and berries. Akutan sits just west of an active volcano and not far from the island’s thermal hot springs.

The village of Akutan began in 1878 as a fur storage and trading port for the Western Fur & Trading Company. The company's agent established a commercial cod fishing and processing business that quickly attracted nearby Unangans to the community.   In 1942 the Japanese attacked nearby Unalaska and the U.S. government evacuated Akutan residents to the Ketchikan area. The village was re-established in 1944, although many villagers chose not to return. This exposure to the outside world brought many changes to the traditional lifestyle and attitudes of the community.

Akutan is a fishing community of approximately 75 year-round residents, with the majority of the population made up of transient fish processing workers who live in bunkhouses (group quarters).

Governance: The city was incorporated in 1979 and maintains a Manager form of government.  Regular elections are held the first Tuesday in October.

Education: Akutan school falls within the Aleutians East Borough School District.  The school currently enrolls 14 students from preschool through twelfth grade, who are guided by two teachers. Superintendent: Michael Seifert
