Fisheries in Southwest Alaska
Southwest Alaska is the home to the most productive and well-managed fisheries in the world. The fertile ocean environments and freshwater rivers, streams, and lakes of the region produce a variety of abundant fisheries resources. Many species of groundfish, finfish, shellfish, and marine invertebrates are available in commercially harvestable quantities.
Commercial seafood harvesting and processing comprise a significant portion of the regional economy and, for some communities in the region, serve as the only basis for the cash economy. Subsistence fishing is a traditional way of life for many residents of the region; serving as both a means to feed their families and to continue the ways of their ancestors. Southwest Alaska is also known as a premier sport fishing destination.
